Artist Essay

Joseph DeLappe and Micol Hebron are both very creative artists and have their own style and uniqueness. Joseph DeLappe is a more sculptured artist and imaginative rather than where Hebron is a more realistic and in the real-world artist. From looking at DeLappe’s artwork, it seems as though he is more of a fictional artist. He has created many pieces that give off the vibes of a mythical. On the other hand, Micol Hebron is a realist artist. She has made several pieces that follow the social issues that occur during the time she creates them. I like the way both artists create their work with their own minds and interpret everything differently.

DeLappe created a piece called “Work/Play” in 2001 and the pieces are incredible. The up-close images are insane. The strokes he used to create the hair like structure looks like a computer did it. Although the colors are the same, black and white, it is still intriguing in the way that the texture looks realistic. I also really like the way he created it in 6 different images and used different angles to really capture the image and unique details. Micol Hebron created an image called “Cactus Pinup” in 1975. It’s definitely a little odd when you first look at it because it’s just a naked woman sitting there, but with a cactus. I really liked that she used photography for it and incorporated the shadows and such for the piece. It’s interesting because it’s kind of seductive in a way, but still very mysterious. The images are all in black and white, so it gives the feel that it was created awhile ago.

For DeLappe’s piece, I wonder what made him think to start sketching out hair like strokes on a paper. I also wonder how he thought he was going to make that a good piece. I feel like when I sketch something for fun it doesn’t turn out like the way he did. Could you elaborate on the meaning of the compilation of the black strokes? With Hebron, I’m really interested in the woman painting. I think it is very cool and interesting because the female body is so captivating. Everything about the piece was incredible. Could you explain what made you think to incorporate the cacti? It is a nice and unique touch; I just am curious for the thought process.

I enjoy looking at artwork now. Previously, I wasn’t too fascinated by it because I didn’t understand the meaning behind any of it. Now, I love seeing the different kinds of images and pieces artists can create. The way their mind is that large and can think of images just like that. I think it’s awesome the lengths people’s imaginations can go to and I wish mine could. I think if I spent time working on it and actually focusing, I could really do it. I’m very interested in art pieces now and could look at them all the time.
